Accessibility Statement

Effective Date: October 29, 2026 · Last updated: October 29, 2026

TownHallOS exists to make government understandable to everyone, so the site has to work for everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or other assistive technology.

Our goal

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the site, and we treat accessibility problems as bugs.

What we do

  • Write in plain language and avoid jargon.
  • Use headings, landmarks and labels so pages make sense to screen readers.
  • Design pages to work at phone widths and when zoomed, without sideways scrolling.
  • Underline links in body text so they don't rely on color alone.
  • Run automated accessibility checks (axe) on our public pages and fix what they find.

Known limitations

Our most recent review, on October 29, 2026, found these issues. We are working on them:

  • Color contrast: white text on our orange buttons, including Donate, and some small gray text don't meet the 4.5:1 contrast ratio WCAG requires.
  • Charts and maps: some charts and maps in the Census Explorer and on bill pages show information visually and may be hard to use with a screen reader. If you need the numbers behind a chart, contact us and we will send them.
  • Third-party pages: our donation pages (Givebutter) and newsletter emails (Beehiiv) are run by other companies, and we can't fix every issue on them.

Report a barrier

If something on TownHallOS is hard to use, tell us which page and what happened. Email community@townhallos.org or write to 8401 Mayland Drive, Suite A, Richmond, VA 23294. We aim to respond within five business days, and we can provide information in another format if you need it.
